and Marine Communications

VHF Radios generally operate in the 156-157 MHz Range, and play an important role in marine communications. They provide a means of communication between boaters, (ship to ship) and also from boats to land based stations (ship to shore). An emergency channel, #16, is available for use in life threatening situations, or situations involving the potential loss of equipment. This channel is monitored by the Coast Guard at all times, and provides an invaluable communications link for boaters in distress, allowing them to obtain help quickly. Other channels are designated for public correspondence, commercial use, port use, or Coast Guard use only. There are also several weather channels that broadcast in the 162MHz range.

VHF Marine Radios can be purchased from numerous sources, and are available in portable configurations, sometimes referred to as "walkie-talkie" style, or a base type unit that has a permanently attached mounting bracket, a separate antenna, and is powered by the boat's 12 volt electric system. Both types of radios have advantages and disadvantages that you need to be aware of when deciding which type of radio is best for you.

Portable VHF's are the most convenient type of radio to purchase and operate. They require no installation, and you can easily take them from boat to boat. They are however, limited in power, and therefore will not transmit as far as a mounted unit. You also need to make sure your batteries are charged and ready for use.

Mounted VHF Radios require a separate power source and antenna. These units are more powerful than hand held radios, and their transmit range is governed by the height of the antenna. Since these systems utilize the boat's 12 volt power system, there are no additional batteries to keep charged. However, in the event of an on-board electrical problem, your mounted radio may be inoperable.

There are more choices today for marine communications than ever before. While VHF is still very popular, you can also choose from satellite and radio telephones, as well as cellular phones. Be sure to examine the benefits of each communications system, to determine the best unit or units for your needs.
