Marine Fuel Filters,
Installation and Replacement

Marine fuel filters play an important part in protecting your engine, and keeping it running smoothly for many years. While all marine engine systems have some type of filter as standard equipment direct from the factory, after market filter systems are available that provide additional filtering capability and protection.

Water separating fuel filters are standard equipment on many boats, and are also available for boat owners to purchase and install. These filters, which are similar in appearance to an oil filter, do just what the name implies, separating water from the fuel, as well as other contaminates, that could cause poor performance or engine damage.

When installing a filter system or any fuel system accessory, it is crucial that you use marine grade components that are certified by the US Coast Guard. Hoses, fittings, tanks, and other components need to meet specific requirements, due to the unique operating demands and conditions of the marine environment.

Follow all installation instructions carefully, and do not use any hoses or fittings that are not certified for marine use. Most vendors will be able to supply you with any components necessary that may not be included with the filter, and it is highly recommended that you use their parts and accessories. After you have installed your filter, check for leaks before you get to the lake, and be sure to replace the filter cartridge at least annually, or at the supplier's recommended intervals.
